To see the city of Orlando redeemed by the power of the gospel for the glory of God.

The Generous Life

Living a generous life is more often easier said and done. Here’s why: We fall into the trap that says that generosity is simply a portion of our lives, “a portion of our income should be given generously, an amount of our time should be used generously, and some of my gifts and abilities should be given for the sake of generosity”. This view of generosity falls far short of what generosity truly is, a giving of our whole selves to God.

Instead of living a life of generosity we live of our lives as if we are entitled. We live wrongly believing that God owes us something, we live as if the world owes us something. Here is where that becomes a problem, when God doesn’t come through the way we feel we are deserving of it we call God to give an account. We place ourselves on the throne and ask God to answer to us. Do you see how backwards that is?

Gratitude to God

To live generously is to be filled with gratitude to God for what he is given in his Son Christ Jesus. To the church of Corinth Paul reminds them of what God has done when he tells them “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8.9).

Do you see that? Do you see what Christ has done? The question now becomes do you believe it? Is Christ your riches?  If we believe this to be true then it changes everything about our lives. We realize as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6.20 “you are not your own, for you were bought with a price”. If what Jesus has done gives us riches beyond our wildest imagination then we will live with our hands open. Warren Wiersbe writes “an open heart cannot maintain a closed hand”.  If Christ is truly Lord of your life then he not only get’s part of your life, he gets all of it! This world is not where our riches are, but our treasure is in heaven.

Generous Church

My prayer is that this series would penetrate our hearts and cause us to be a generous church. That we would be a church that believes that we have more than enough in Jesus Christ. A church that lives open handed in the city of Orlando and around the world advancing the kingdom of heaven in lives that will be changed by the power of the Gospel for all eternity.
