What would you do with $900 Million?
This past week the Powerball jackpot was $900 million dollars, which would be a $558 million dollar payout after taxes. One could only dream of what they would do with $558 million dollars. The mansion you would buy, the cars for your new 12 car garage, investing for retirement, you kids retirement, and your grandkids retirement. All of your hearts longing could be fulfilled if just by chance you are the winner.
The chances of you winning the jackpot of the Powerball are 1 in 292,000,000. With the idea of a chance people will buy, buy, and buy in hopes that they become filthy rich.
I was convicted this week because I could get more excited about the winnings of $558 million than I am about the salvation I have in Jesus.
YOU ALREADY WON THE JACKPOT!
Paul tells the church in Corinth, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” I believe an accurate translation of this verse to the Christians who live in America today, those who can only dream of winning the jackpot, those who desire riches beyond their wildest imagination is this. YOU ALREADY WON THE JACKPOT!
Think about this, what is it that you have in Jesus that you deserved? NOTHING! What is it about your salvation that you earned? NOTHING! Did you buy your salvation? NO! Everything you can ever have, or want, or need has been given to you in Christ.
Wealth beyond your most lavish dreams.
God, whose wealth far exceeds even that of Bill Gates has given to your wealth beyond your most lavish dreams. It is better than anything this world could offer.
There are a lot of people in this world trying to get from the bottom to top. There are a lot of people who have great hopes of climbing to the top of this world’s income brackets. There is no one, and I mean no one who is making elaborate plans on how to get from the top to the bottom. But this is the love of God in Christ Jesus. Before the foundations of the world he knew what he would do for you. Jesus went from the top to the bottom, why? He did this in order to bring you from the bottom to the top. You cannot earn that, win a lottery ticket for that, you can’t even plan it, it was done for you in Christ.
Heirs to the Kingdom
Jesus became a man and dwelt among us, he took on flesh, he took on sin. In fact God made Jesus to be sin so that in him we might become God’s righteousness. He took on all of our badness, sin, shame, guilt. He died the death that we deserved to die so that we might have the life that only he deserves. Because Jesus got what we deserve, we get what he deserves, we get a right and reconciled relationship with the God whom we rebelled. The perfect and Holy God we committed treason against is the God who now accepts us as children, heirs to the Kingdom all because of Jesus.
Friends, if the Powerball jackpot is better than that, then I believe we scarcely know Jesus as savior. We haven’t tasted the riches of the salvation freely given. We don’t understand the absolute poverty of our soul and this world.
It is like what C.S. Lewis says; we are playing with mud pies in the slum while a holiday at sea awaits.
May we see the riches offered us in Christ and may we live for him!
YOU ALREADY WON THE JACKPOT!
